Leader of squad 10, Asuma is a strong leader and excels in hand-to-hand combat using his two chakra blades. With the chakra blades he can extend his chakra as if it was the blades themselves, piercing through rock and other objects easily. He forms a strong bond with his student Shikamaru, and sees the natural talent and leadership abilities in him despite his laziness. Asuma smokes and carries with him a lighter that appears to be an heirloom and very important to him. Asuma also plays Shogi with Shikamaru quite often, but never is able to win.

While he attempts to hide it, Asuma is in love with Kurenai, and while they do not have a relationship the feelings seem to be mutual.
