Gaara is the Hidden Village of Sands secret weapon, as he contains one of the great demons just like Naruto. The demon inside of Gaara is the one-tailed Shukaku, and has caused Gaara to be considered dangerous and cast out by the villagers that live with him. At one point the leaders of the Hidden Village of Sand attempted to have Gaara assassinated when he was young, as they feared he was too dangerous. The attempt failed and eventually Gaara was accepted, although everyone still fears and avoids him.

Gaara first appears for the Chuunin exams in Konoha. He is the most powerful Genin to participate, and even his teammates fear him. Like Naruto he does not have great fighting abilities, however his massive Chakra and Chakra control allows him to utilize sand to protect him and crush his enemies. He carries a gourd (container) of sand with him always, so that he can fight even in areas that have no sand.
