Neji is a member of the 'branch' family of the Hyuga clan. This means he is supposed to be a servant to the main branch, and should not become as great of a ninja as a member of the main branch. Despite this, Neji trains hard all his life to become as powerful as members of the main branch, and looks down upon them. Hinata Hyuga is a member of the main branch, and Neji harbors negative feelings for her through most of the series, since she is treated as a member of the main branch even though she is weaker than he is.
